The Mandale Depot for Mumbai Metro Line 2B has been officially opened, and it is Asia's largest and the first elevated metro depot. Built by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the depot covers 32 hectares and will support Metro Line 2B, which runs from DN Nagar to Mandale

in Mankhurd.
Two Levels of Metro Depot
The depot is built on two levels and has the capacity to hold 72 metro train sets. A key part of the facility is its G+3 Depot Control Centre, which will oversee daily train operations, maintenance activities, and safety systems. This modern control centre will help ensure trains run on time and that commuters receive reliable service. According to MMRDA officials, strong technological monitoring is essential for smooth metro functioning.
One important feature of the Mandale Depot is its 965-metre test track, which will be used to test trains before they begin carrying passengers. The depot will also have four shunting necks and one elevated neck to manage train movement efficiently.
Metro Depot Came with Challenges
MMRDA mentioned that building the depot came with several engineering difficulties, especially because of the coastal soil and the need to build access roads for heavy machinery. Engineers used creative solutions to overcome these challenges and complete the project successfully.
The Mandale Depot is being promoted as "The People's Depot." MMRDA is encouraging Mumbai residents to learn about the facility and feel connected to it. The goal is to build a sense of pride and ownership among commuters as the city's metro system continues to grow.
