As the holiday season approaches, families across India are getting ready for Christmas and New Year trips. With schools closed for the winter holidays, parents are planning travel that is affordable, safe, and convenient for their children. Train journeys remain one of the most popular and budget-friendly ways to travel,

as Indian Railways connects almost every major city and tourist destination in the country. Families enjoy train travel for its scenic routes, comfortable sleeper coaches, and modern air-conditioned compartments, making it an ideal option for long-distance trips during the festive season.
Indian Railway's Child Ticket Policy
Before booking tickets, parents need to understand the Indian Railways child ticket policy, which outlines fares based on a child's age. According to the Ministry of Railways, children under five years old can travel for free if they do not require a separate seat or berth. Parents don't need to buy a ticket for them in such cases. However, if a separate seat or berth is requested for a child below five, the full adult fare will apply.
Child's Seat Fares
For children between 5 and 12 years of age, fares depend on whether a separate seat or berth is needed. If not, parents can book a ticket at a reduced child fare. But if a seat or berth is required, the fare will be charged at the adult rate. This allows families to choose based on comfort and budget.
Once a child turns 12, they are considered an adult passenger and must pay the full fare for both reserved and unreserved tickets. Parents should ensure that the correct age and date of birth are entered when booking through the IRCTC website or app, as giving false details can lead to penalties or denied boarding.
