Digital Ticketing: Kolkata Metro's New Initiative to Eliminate Booking Counters; Check Stations

The Kolkata Metro has launched a pilot project to introduce 'No Booking Counter Stations' at specific locations on the Joka-Majerhat (Purple Line) and New Garia-Ruby More (Orange Line) corridors. This initiative aims to modernise the ticketing process by eliminating traditional booking counters.

Kolkata Metro s New Initiative to Elimin

A Metro spokesperson mentioned that three stations have been chosen for this initial phase: Taratala and Sakherbazar on the Purple Line, and Kavi Sukanta on the Orange Line. These stations were selected based on their passenger traffic.

Under this pilot project, booking counters for tokens and smart cards will be closed. Instead, passengers must use Automatic Smart Card Recharge Machines (ASCRMs) to purchase tokens, QR code-based tickets, smart cards, and recharge their smart cards.

Passenger Traffic at Selected Stations

Taratala station sees about 70 passengers daily, Kavi Sukanta station around 220 passengers, and Sakherbazar station approximately 55 passengers. The Metro Railway authorities will monitor passenger responses and feedback over the coming days.

The ASCRMs also support UPI payment systems for ticket purchases, making it easier for passengers to buy tickets using digital payments. This feature is expected to streamline the ticketing process significantly.

Monitoring and Review Period

A spokesperson stated that Metro Railway authorities will review the situation after six months based on passenger feedback. This review will help determine whether to expand the project to other stations or make necessary adjustments.

This initiative follows similar advancements on other lines of the Kolkata Metro, aiming to enhance passenger convenience through technology. The success of this pilot project could pave the way for more such innovations in public transportation.

The introduction of 'No Booking Counter Stations' is part of a broader effort to modernise Kolkata's metro system. By adopting new technologies like ASCRMs and UPI payments, the metro aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for its passengers.
