Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge Set to Slash Assam-Meghalaya Travel Distance by 250 KM; When Will it Start?

The northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya, nestled amidst the lush greenery of India's eastern frontier, are poised for a transformative leap in connectivity with the imminent completion of the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge. Spanning over the majestic Brahmaputra River, this ambitious infrastructure project promises to significantly reduce the travel distance between the two states by approximately 250 kilometers. As anticipation builds, the question on everyone's mind is: When will this groundbreaking endeavor commence?

Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge

The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge is more than just a construction project; it's a lifeline for the northeastern region of India. Here's everything you need to know about this groundbreaking initiative:

Location and Purpose:

The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge is poised to become a vital link across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Assam's Dhubri and Meghalaya's Phulbari. Currently, the reliance on ferries for travel between these two states has been both time-consuming, taking up to 2.5 hours, and subject to disruption during heavy monsoon rains due to the rising water levels of the Brahmaputra River.

Length and Design:

Spanning an impressive 19 kilometers, the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge is set to be India's longest river bridge. It comprises a navigation bridge stretching approximately 12.625 kilometers, complemented by approach viaducts on both sides, with 3.5 kilometers on the Dhubri end and 2.2 kilometers on the Phulbari side.

Contract and Funding:

The prestigious task of constructing this bridge has been entrusted to Larsen and Toubro (L&T), with funding provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Overseeing the project's execution is the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL).

Significance:

The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge holds immense significance for the northeastern states and India as a whole. Once completed, it will drastically enhance connectivity between Assam and Meghalaya, reducing the distance between them by approximately 250 kilometers. This improved connectivity is poised to catalyze trade and commerce, benefiting not only Assam and Meghalaya but also neighboring states like Tripura and the Barak Valley. Moreover, the project is expected to generate new employment opportunities, further bolstering economic growth in the region.

Expected Completion:

Anticipated to be operational by the year 2026-27, the Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge is on track to revolutionize transportation infrastructure and foster greater regional integration in India's northeastern states.

The Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge stands as a testament to India's commitment to bolstering connectivity and promoting economic development in its northeastern region. Once operational, it will not only bridge physical distances but also pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for the region and its people.
