After the intensity of the continuous heatwave, parts of Delhi experienced a sudden change in weather on Tuesday, i.e., May 5. Rain, thunderstorms, and even hailstorms hit many areas of the city, including Dwarka and Indira Gandhi International Airport, which experienced heavy hail, but also brought relief from the high

temperatures. However, the bad weather affected flight operations, and five flights had to be diverted in the evening.
Delhi's Changed Weather
The rainfall caused a clear drop in temperatures across the city. Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 33.6°C, which is 5.7 degrees below normal. Other areas, including Palam, Ridge, and Ayanagar, also reported lower daytime temperatures. According to rainfall data, Palam received 9.8 mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, while Ayanagar received 1.4 mm. Safdarjung recorded only a small amount, and Lodi Road and Ridge saw no rain during that time. Earlier in the day, however, Ridge recorded 11.9 mm of rainfall, Lodi Road 6.1 mm, and Safdarjung 4.6 mm.
Delhi Under Yellow Alert
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of more rain and thunderstorms in some areas later in the evening and night. Weather experts say this change is due to a western disturbance affecting the region, which may also reduce the chances of a heatwave for about a week. The rain also improved air quality. Delhi recorded its cleanest day of May this year, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 86, which falls in the satisfactory category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, this indicates acceptable air quality for most people.
With more rain expected and temperatures remaining below average, residents can enjoy a short break from the heat and cleaner air in the coming days.
