The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted unusual weather across many parts of North India on June 11 and 12 due to a western disturbance moving in from the west. This weather system is expected to bring thunderstorms, rain, strong winds, and dust storms to states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

Delhi Rain Alert on 11 June
In Delhi, the weather is likely to change significantly by the evening of June 11. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong gusty winds across the city. Before the weather changes, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, ranging between 40°C and 42°C. However, the arrival of rain and stormy conditions is likely to provide relief from the intense heat. By June 12, the maximum temperature in Delhi may drop to around 35°C to 37°C.
What is the Western Disturbance Effect?
A western disturbance is a weather system that forms over the Mediterranean region and moves eastward with high-altitude winds. As it travels, it gathers moisture and eventually reaches the Himalayan region, where it triggers rainfall and other weather activity over the northern plains of India.
Western Disturbance to Leave an Impact on Other States
The IMD has also warned about thundersqualls in Delhi and nearby states. These are sudden and powerful bursts of wind that last for at least a minute. Wind speeds during these events may reach 60 to 70 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching up to 80 kilometres per hour in some places.
Apart from Delhi and neighbouring regions, hailstorms are expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. Dust storms are also likely to affect several areas of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Residents have been advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions as strong winds, lightning, and heavy weather activity could disrupt normal life in many places.
