Delhi Government's New Travel Incentive for employees to use Delhi Metro & Public Transport

The Delhi government has announced a new travel incentive for its employees to encourage the use of public transport. Officials said that government staff who travel using the common mobility card on the Delhi Metro and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses will be eligible for additional financial benefits.

Delhi Government's New Scheme

The initiative is part of the government's larger effort to save fuel and reduce pollution, especially amid concerns about fuel supplies due to the ongoing crisis in West Asia. By encouraging employees to use public transport instead of private vehicles, the government hopes to lower fuel consumption and improve air quality in the national capital.

According to an order issued by the Finance Department, employees of the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) who spend at least 25 percent of their monthly transport allowance, excluding Dearness Allowance, on purchasing or recharging a common mobility card will receive an extra incentive. The incentive will be equal to 10 percent of their eligible transport allowance and will be paid along with their monthly salary.

How is the Initiative Beneficial?

The government said that the scheme has been introduced to promote public transport while supporting efforts toward fuel conservation and pollution control. The announcement comes shortly after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched the 90-day "Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan" fuel-saving campaign. The campaign encouraged government employees to work from home for two days each week and make greater use of public transport.

Moreover, the Delhi Transport Corporation has introduced special bus services for government employees. These buses will connect residential areas with nearby metro stations and the Delhi Secretariat, making daily commuting easier.

The order also stated that employees will be provided with common mobility cards by DTC, subject to their consent and guidelines prepared by the Finance Department in consultation with the transport authority. The incentive scheme will initially run for six months, after which the government will review its effectiveness and decide whether to extend it further.
