Cyclone Montha Has Transformed into a Cyclonic Storm

The RMC said that Cyclone Montha has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal. On Tuesday morning, it was located around 160 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam and 240 km south-southeast of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, by Tuesday evening or night. Wind speeds could reach 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph.

Depression on the Arabian Sea

At the same time, another weather system, a depression over the east-central Arabian Sea, is moving northeastward. It lies about 580 km west-southwest of Mumbai and is expected to continue in the same direction over the next 36 hours. Though Cyclone Montha will mainly affect coastal Andhra Pradesh, its outer rain bands have brought moderate to heavy rain to parts of northern Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai and Tiruvallur.

School Holidays on 29 October in Chennai?

Weather blogger R. Pradeep John (Tamil Nadu Weatherman) said the rain in Chennai would reduce by Tuesday afternoon. North Chennai recorded 60-70 mm of rainfall, while southern areas got 30-50 mm. He added that the next two weeks may see only light or isolated rain. If the rain eases, schools in Chennai and nearby districts are likely to function normally on Wednesday. However, the final decision will be made by the District Collector depending on the weather. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha have closed schools in several districts as Cyclone Montha approaches.
