Chennai is on high alert as Cyclone Fengal approaches, bringing heavy rainfall and severe weather. A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, about 500 km south-southeast of Chennai, is likely to intensify into a cyclone soon. This has already led to significant rainfall in Tamil Nadu's Cauvery delta districts, with orange alerts issued for November 29 and 30. Areas like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu are also preparing for the storm's impact.

Weather Alerts and School Closures
The Regional Weather Forecasting Centre has issued a yellow alert for Chennai on November 28 and December 1, with more severe orange alerts for November 29 and 30. To ensure the safety of students, schools and colleges in Chennai, Karaikal, Puducherry, and other affected areas have been closed. Authorities are keeping a close watch and providing regular updates on the cyclone's progression and its effects.
Transportation Challenges
Cyclone Fengal may disrupt air travel. IndiGo Airlines has already warned of potential flight delays or cancellations at airports in Chennai, Tuticorin, and Madurai. Passengers are advised to stay updated and plan accordingly. While rail services remain unaffected for now, residents are urged to monitor announcements for any changes.
Waterlogging and Traffic Issues
Heavy rain has caused severe waterlogging in Chennai, disrupting daily life. Areas like Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and Velachery are flooded, with water levels reaching knee-deep in parts of OMR. Incomplete drainage work in South Chennai and blocked channels near Pallavaram on GST Road have worsened the problem. Despite ongoing efforts to improve stormwater drainage in areas like Royapettah and Thiruvanmiyur, waterlogging remains a major challenge as the cyclone nears.
With the city on high alert, residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Orange warnings signal intense rainfall in the coming days, making it essential for everyone to remain vigilant. As Cyclone Fengal approaches, Chennai is bracing for the storm's impact on transportation, education, and daily life.
