Tamil Nadu is bracing for intense weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rainfall and storm conditions in the coming days. The coastal regions of the state, including cities like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur, have already experienced significant rainfall, causing traffic jams and waterlogging. This is just the beginning, as more severe weather is expected from November 27 to November 29, with Chennai placed under an orange alert.

Cyclonic Activity Over the Bay of Bengal
The current weather challenges stem from a cyclonic circulation over the East Equatorial Indian Ocean and the Southeast Bay of Bengal. This system developed into a low-pressure area and has since intensified into a deep depression. Experts warn it could strengthen into a cyclonic storm in the coming days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai is closely monitoring the situation, as northern coastal districts and the Cauvery delta regions have already seen varied rainfall patterns, ranging from mild showers to heavy downpours.
District-Wise Rainfall Warnings
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu. On November 26, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Thanjavur are expected to experience very heavy rainfall. Similarly, Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai may face extremely heavy showers. From November 27 to November 28, areas like Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Villupuram are under alert for heavy rains, with the possibility of extremely heavy downpours in isolated locations.
Thunderstorm and Lightning Alerts
Adding to the caution, thunderstorms and lightning have been forecasted for Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Alerts have been categorized as yellow, orange, and red, indicating the severity of the weather in different districts. A red alert, the most severe warning, is in place for districts such as Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal. Chennai and nearby regions are under an orange alert, with cloudy skies and intermittent rains expected.
Safety Measures for Citizens
Temperatures in Chennai are predicted to range between 24°C to 30°C. Residents are advised to stay informed and follow safety guidelines issued by authorities. Fishermen have been strongly advised to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal due to rough sea conditions.
Authorities are on high alert to manage disruptions caused by the severe weather. Citizens are urged to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and ensure their safety during this challenging period.
