Chennai News: 1st AC Local Train Launched; Traffic Diversions Announced on GST Road for 3 Days

Chennai has received two big updates that will affect many people who travel in and around the city. One is good news for daily train commuters, and the other is about traffic changes due to an important road project. These developments show that the city is working towards better travel comfort and long-term road improvements.

Chennai News Updates

New AC Local Train Starts Between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu

On Saturday morning, the Southern Railway's Chennai Division launched its first air-conditioned Electric Multiple Unit (AC EMU) train. This train runs between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu, offering a new level of comfort to people who travel daily on suburban routes. The train started its journey at 7 am and marks a big improvement in local train services in Chennai.

The train has been made by the Integral Coach Factory and has 12 coaches. It comes with many modern features like air conditioning, automatic sliding doors, and sealed gangways to move between coaches. Inside, passengers will find stainless steel seats, wide glass windows, and well-planned lighting. It also has safety features like CCTV cameras, GPS-based LED display boards, and an emergency communication system.

This AC EMU train also saves energy with special brakes that reduce power use by up to 35%. It also has an air spring suspension to give a smoother ride. These new features are expected to make everyday train travel more enjoyable, especially during the hot summer months.

Route and Fare Details

The new train will run six services from Monday to Saturday-three in each direction. Out of these, four services will run between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu, and two will go only up to Tambaram. To use this AC train, passengers must follow a special fare plan. The ticket prices start at Rs 35 for short distances up to 10 km, and go up to Rs 105 for longer trips between 56 and 60 km.

Monthly passes are also available for regular travelers. These season tickets cost between Rs 620 and Rs 2,115, depending on the distance. However, people holding First Class season tickets will need to pay according to the new fare system created just for AC EMU trains.

This launch follows similar AC local train services in Mumbai and comes at a time when Chennai faces hot weather. Many commuters are happy with this new option, as it offers a cooler and smoother travel experience on one of the busiest train routes in the city. Southern Railway's move also shows their plan to improve local transport and make it more modern.

Traffic Changes Due to Elevated Corridor Construction

While the AC train is a positive update, the city is also preparing for temporary traffic changes due to a major construction project. A 4-lane elevated road is being built on GST Road between Teynampet and Saidapet. To manage traffic during this work, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police have announced several changes for drivers between April 20 and April 22.

Vehicles going from Teynampet to Saidapet will now go through Cenotaph Road, take a turn at Turnbulls Junction, and then go via C.P. Ramaswamy Road to reach Nandanam Junction. From there, they can join Anna Salai and go on to their destinations.

Those coming from Saidapet to C.P. Ramaswamy Road will no longer have a direct route. They must travel through Anna Salai and Cenotaph Road instead. Some roads will also become one-way. GKM Bridge will allow only one-way traffic, and vehicles cannot enter it from Gandhi Mandapam Road. Similarly, Ratna Nagar Main Road will be one-way from Cenotaph Road, although entry from Anna Salai to Cenotaph 1st Street is still allowed.

Drivers from Kotturpuram to Teynampet through Cenotaph Road will need to use the GKM Bridge service road, then go via Turnbulls Junction and C.P. Ramaswamy Road to Nandanam Junction, and finally reach Anna Salai.

To make sure vehicles move smoothly, the traffic police have banned parking on many busy roads. This includes Anna Salai, Cenotaph Road, and C.P. Ramaswamy Road, as well as the nearby one-way streets.
