The Chennai Metro's new line connecting Vadapalani and Poonamallee is almost ready, and officials are now pushing hard to finish it. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is working around the clock with several workers and machinery to complete this six-kilometer stretch under Phase II. They are expecting in mid-January 2026
to start trial runs of the metro trains on this section.
Workers into Work
About 4,000 workers are busy on different jobs: most are building the elevated viaduct and deck slabs, hundreds are laying tracks, and the rest are handling electrification and signalling. To speed things up, CMRL has brought in 57 cranes, much more than usual, and has moved people from other metro corridors to focus on this part. On average, workers are laying around 300 meters of track each day.
The Construction Plan
Because this route uses a double-decker structure, where two transport systems run in the same viaduct, construction is technically complex. Engineers say designing and building the slabs and girders requires high precision, as both systems need to be safe and stable.
Once the trial runs begin in mid-January, CMRL plans to start commercial services by late January or early February. At first, there won't be any stops between Vadapalani and Porur, so the first public halt after Vadapalani will be Porur. The other stations along this stretch are expected to be finished by June 2026.
Originally, CMRL hoped to open the Poonamallee-Porur section in December, but the schedule was delayed due to pending safety clearances. Now, with an interim speed certificate in hand, most of the work is nearly done, and the focus is on clearing final checks so trial runs can begin as planned.
