A surprise mock drill was conducted around midnight at Koyambedu Metro Station to test how quickly & effectively emergency teams respond to accidents, and it was designed to simulate a train derailment and check coordination between different services.

Derailment Caused Panic
The situation briefly caused panic when the Fire and Rescue Services control room received information about a possible derailment. Fire personnel quickly rushed to the station within minutes, led by the Koyambedu fire officer. When they arrived, they found the station entrances locked. However, with the help of security staff, they managed to enter and quickly moved towards the platform, expecting an emergency. However, upon reaching the platform, they saw metro officials standing calmly near a stationary train, with no signs of any accident. It was then explained that the entire situation was part of a planned mock drill.
Why are the Mock Drills Necessary?
After knowing about the situation, the fire personnel felt relieved and appreciated the smooth coordination during the exercise. Metro officials also praised the quick response of the Fire and Rescue Services team. The initial alert had created some tension in the Koyambedu area, but the situation was soon clarified. Officials said such drills are important to boost emergency preparedness and ensure that all teams know how to act during real incidents, securing passengers' lives.
Why was it undertaken?
This drill was conducted after a real incident in December 2024, when a metro train derailed after the driver applied brakes upon noticing sludge on the track. Following that, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) set up a committee to investigate the issue and took steps to fix problems, including water leakage in underground sections.
Authorities also invited contractors to address these concerns. Regular safety drills are now being conducted to train staff and strengthen crisis response systems.
