After six years of waiting, travelers between Kathmandu and Kolkata can soon enjoy direct flights again. Buddha Air, a well-known private airline in Nepal, has announced that it will restart its flights between these two cities by mid-July 2025. This is big news for both business and leisure travelers who missed this short, 85-minute journey.
The airline stopped flying to Kolkata in 2019 due to financial losses, even though it used to run the service three times a week. Now, Buddha Air is ready to fly four times a week on this route, filling the gap left by Air India, which also stopped flying here recently.
A New Opportunity After Air India Exit
Buddha Air sees this as a great chance to serve travelers now that Air India is no longer on the route. "We competed with Air India when we flew to this destination six years ago. Now that Air India has pulled out, we see a commercial opportunity and have decided to resume the flights," said Rupesh Shrestha, Buddha Air's Director of Sales and Marketing.
On social media, the airline posted, "Namaste Kolkata! The wait is almost over... stay tuned! Kolkata coming soon," which has created excitement among frequent flyers and travel agencies.
Bigger Plans: Guwahati and Lucknow Next
Buddha Air has bigger dreams too. The airline already runs regular flights between Kathmandu and Varanasi. Now, it wants to expand further and start flights to other Indian cities like Guwahati and Lucknow. "We see strong potential for two-way trade and tourism in these destinations," added Shrestha, showing the airline's plan to connect even more cities across the border.
These new connections could help both countries grow stronger in tourism and trade. Nepal and India have deep cultural and geographical ties, and direct flights help people travel more easily for business, family, and religious visits.
