Namma Metro in Bengaluru carried more than a million passengers on Monday, as many people returned to the city after a five-day festival break. The total number of metro boardings was 10,09,970. Among these, 4,32,824 passengers travelled on the Purple Line, 2,82,099 on the Green Line, and 60,811 on the
newly opened Yellow Line. Around 2,34,236 passengers used the interchange stations at Majestic and RV Road.
A Comparison of Metro Ridership
For comparison, metro ridership was 9.74 lakh on September 29 and 10.01 lakh on September 22. Metro stations located near major entry routes into the city, such as Tumakuru Road, Mysuru Road, Hosur Road, Kanakapura Road, and Old Madras Road, experienced heavy crowds. In some places, queues extended onto the streets. To manage the rush, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had to close a few station entrances.
Increased Ridership
A metro staff member said that they did not expect such a large crowd on Monday. Ridership has been growing steadily since the Yellow Line began operations on August 11. In August, the metro saw an average of 8,46,325 passengers per day, with a total of over 2.62 crore passengers travelling during the month. According to a senior BMRCL official, weekday ridership is now regularly around one million. Monday's figures were "more or less" in line with that trend, he said. The metro's highest-ever ridership was recorded on August 14, when 10,82,394 passengers used the service.
The growing use of Namma Metro highlights the importance of the metro for daily commuters in Bengaluru. With continued network expansion and the opening of new lines, the metro is playing a vital role in easing city travel and reducing traffic congestion.
