The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Will use the European Train Control System Level 2 on All Corridor

The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is likely to use the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 on all its corridors, rather than using older signalling methods. This modern system is widely used in Europe and is considered much safer and more efficient, allowing trains to run with better communication,

automatic control, and shorter gaps between services. If adopted fully, Bengaluru's suburban rail will become one of the first rail-based urban systems in India to use this advanced signalling technology across the entire network.

Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project

The suburban rail project in Bengaluru has 4 corridors with a total planned length of about 149 km. These corridors will connect key parts of the city and the surrounding areas. The major lines include Mallige Line (Benniganahalli-Chikkabanavara), Kanaka Line (Heelalige-Rajanukunte), Sampige Line (KSR Bengaluru-Devanahalli), and Parijaata Line (Kengeri-Whitefield). Together, they are expected to improve daily travel for lakhs of people by offering a faster alternative to road transport in one of India's most traffic-congested cities.

How does the European Train Control System Work?

ETCS Level 2 works through continuous communication between the train and the signalling system, reducing the need for traditional trackside signals. This helps improve safety, better train monitoring, and smoother operations. It can also support more frequent services because trains can run at closer intervals without compromising safety. For a fast-growing city like Bengaluru, this is important because the suburban rail system is expected to carry a large number of passengers every day once all corridors become operational.

How will the Modern Signalling System Benefit Bengaluru's Suburban Rail?

The project is being implemented by K-RIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited). Some corridors are already under construction, while others are still in planning or tender stages. By choosing a modern signalling system for all corridors, the project authorities aim to make Bengaluru's suburban rail more future-ready, efficient, and reliable.
