The Bengaluru Metro Commuters Association (BMCA) has requested the Karnataka government to extend its newly announced free bus pass scheme to Namma Metro services as well. The association has suggested introducing free metro passes for students, saying it would improve access to education, encourage the use of public transport, and provide safer travel options.

Bengaluru Metro Free Passes
In a statement released on Wednesday, BMCA welcomed the government's decision to offer free bus passes to students across Karnataka. However, it said the benefit would be much more useful if students could also travel free on the metro. According to the association, including both buses and metro services would create a seamless and convenient public transport system for students.
BMCA's Concerns Regarding Students' Transportation Expenses
BMCA stressed that transportation expenses should not become an obstacle to education. It pointed out that many students travel long distances every day to attend schools, colleges, coaching centres, and libraries in Bengaluru. Free metro travel would help students from different economic backgrounds reach these places without putting extra financial pressure on their families.
How will it Benefit Students?
The association also highlighted the long-term benefits of allowing students to use the metro free of cost. It believes that regular use of public transport at a young age would encourage students to continue using buses and metro services in the future. This could reduce dependence on private vehicles such as cars and two-wheelers, helping to ease traffic congestion in the city.
MCA further noted that promoting metro travel among students would support the development of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system. By encouraging greater use of public transport, the city could reduce pollution, improve mobility, and make daily commuting easier for thousands of people.
