BEML will soon supply the first metro trainsets for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) section of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's Blue Line. As per reports, two driverless trains will be sent to the Byappanahalli depot for trial runs. A senior official said that these trainsets are expected to
arrive by May, after which testing will begin.
Driverless Trains to go Through Testing
The trains will go through detailed testing and checks for at least five months before they are approved for passenger service to ensure safety and smooth operations. The Blue Line's 18 km elevated stretch between Central Silk Board and KR Pura is planned to be completed by December 2026. The longer extension from KR Pura to Kempegowda International Airport, which is about 37 km, is expected to be ready by December 2027.
Outer Ring Road Corridor
Officials have given priority to the Outer Ring Road corridor, as it is an important route for Bengaluru's major IT and business areas. The trains designed for this route will include several passenger-friendly features. Out of six coaches in each train, four will have luggage racks. For this, two seats in each coach will be removed and replaced with enough space for luggage. However, the front and rear coaches will not have this facility.

Moreover, the trains will have LCD screens showing dynamic route maps and improved safety systems. Meanwhile, BEML has already supplied five trainsets for the Pink Line between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. This 7.5 km stretch is likely to start operations around June, after safety approvals. Both Blue and Pink Line trains will use advanced CBTC technology for driverless operations, though drivers will initially be present.
