The Lucknow Metro project is moving closer to expanding into the Old City, with key formalities now underway. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has announced AYESA as the lowest bidder for the Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract for Line 2 under Phase 1B of the Lucknow Metro project.

East-West Corridor
Line 2 will be an East-West corridor that connects Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. The corridor will have 12 stations, including seven underground and five elevated stations. This new line is expected to reduce traffic problems on the narrow and crowded roads of Old Lucknow. It will also make travel easier for people visiting important heritage and tourist locations such as Bada Imambara, Chhota Imambara, Rumi Darwaza, the Clock Tower, and Moosa Bagh.
Lucknow Metro Network
Once the corridor becomes operational, the total length of the Lucknow Metro network will increase to 34 km. It will connect major business and market areas like Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. The metro will also improve access to key medical institutions, including King George Medical University, and places famous for Lucknow's traditional food and cultural heritage.
Line 2 Project
The Line 2 project involves building an 11.165-km metro route between Charbagh Railway Station and Vasant Kunj through Old Lucknow. The central government approved the project in August last year, with an estimated cost of Rs 5,801 crore.
Elevated Section
As per the Detailed Project Report, the elevated section will cover 4.286 km between Vasant Kunj and Thakurganj, with stations at Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfaraganj, Musa Bagh, and Vasant Kunj. The underground section will stretch 6.879 km between Charbagh and Niwazganj, with stations at Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Railway Station, Medical Chauraha, and Chowk.
UPMRC invited bids for the DDC contract in August 2025 for five years. Technical bids were opened in October, and financial bids were opened on January 21. AYESA emerged as the lowest bidder with a quote of Rs 15.90 crore.
