Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the renovated Anna Flyover in Chennai on Friday, marking its 50th anniversary. Originally opened by late chief minister M Karunanidhi in July 1973, the flyover has undergone significant renovations costing Rs 10.9 crore.
The renovation project included several enhancements to modernise the structure. These improvements feature colourful lighting, GRC panels for pillars, greenery, pedestrian walkways, and an artificial fountain. These additions aim to make the flyover more visually appealing and functional.

Modern Features with Dravidian Touch
The rejuvenated flyover now boasts decorative elements that reflect Dravidian architecture. Among these are Yazhi sculptures and triangular stupas on the pillars, adding a cultural touch to the modernised structure.
A release from the state government highlighted these updates, noting that they enhance both the aesthetic and practical aspects of the flyover. The combination of traditional and contemporary design elements aims to celebrate the region's heritage while providing modern amenities.
The addition of pedestrian walkways is particularly noteworthy as it improves safety and accessibility for those on foot. The greenery incorporated into the design also contributes to a more pleasant environment for all users of the flyover.
Chief Minister Stalin's inauguration of the renovated flyover underscores its importance as a landmark in Chennai. The updates not only commemorate its historical significance but also ensure it meets current urban infrastructure standards.
The colourful lighting installed as part of the renovation enhances visibility at night and adds a vibrant look to the structure. This feature is expected to make night-time travel safer and more enjoyable for commuters.
The artificial fountain is another attractive addition that adds to the flyover's visual appeal. It serves as a focal point, drawing attention to the newly renovated structure and enhancing its overall aesthetic value.
Overall, these renovations aim to blend functionality with beauty, ensuring that Anna Flyover remains a significant and well-loved part of Chennai's urban landscape for years to come.
