Ahmedabad: SG Highway to Get 5 New Overbridges at These Locations; Check Details

To address the increasing number of hit-and-run accidents on the SG highway, plans are in motion to construct five new foot overbridges. These overbridges aim to provide safe and convenient crossing points for pedestrians and reduce fatalities on this busy highway.

SG Highway to Get 5 New Overbridges

Thoughtful and Safe Design

The design of these foot overbridges focuses on both safety and practicality. Each bridge will be 6 meters high to allow heavy vehicles to pass underneath without any issues. The walkways will be 3.50 meters wide, offering ample space for pedestrians. Depending on the location, the length of the bridges will range from 50 to 59 meters. This careful planning ensures that the bridges meet the needs of pedestrians while maintaining smooth traffic flow on the highway. These 6-meter-high bridges with lifts and stairs aim to protect lives and maintain smooth traffic flow.

Accessibility for All

The new foot overbridges will be built under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and will include stairs as well as lifts. This makes them accessible to everyone, including the elderly and people with disabilities, providing a safer option for crossing the highway. Similar projects, such as the foot overbridges near Shahibaug Swaminarayan Temple and Camp Hanuman Temple, have been highly effective, showing that such infrastructure can significantly improve pedestrian safety.

Locations

Five-foot overbridges will be built along the 13 km stretch from ISKCON to Vaishnodevi Circle to enhance pedestrian safety and minimize accidents.

The bridges will be built at key locations: near ISKCON-Rajpath Club, Hotel Grand Bhagwati, Binori Hotel at Thaltej underpass, Gota Bridge, and Nirma University.

Urgent Need for Action

The decision to build these overbridges comes after several tragic incidents, including the recent death of a security guard near Pakwan while crossing the road. These incidents highlight the dangers faced by pedestrians and underline the need for urgent action. Municipal officials and traffic police will also survey high-traffic and accident-prone areas to identify additional locations for such safety measures.

Investment in Safety

The estimated cost of each foot overbridge is around Rs. 3 crore, reflecting a serious commitment to public safety. By investing in these structures, authorities aim to create a safer environment for pedestrians while ensuring the highway remains efficient for vehicles.

The construction of these overbridges is a critical step towards reducing accidents and safeguarding lives on the SG highway. By providing secure crossing points, the project promises to protect pedestrians and support the community's well-being. With plans to extend these safety measures to other areas, the initiative is a comprehensive effort to address the challenges of pedestrian safety in a busy urban setting.
