Adipur-Bhuj Railway Project: Indian Railways has Approved a Major Railway Infrastructure Project in Gujarat

Indian Railways has approved a major rail infrastructure project in Gujarat to improve connectivity in the Kutch region. The project involves doubling the 49-km Adipur-Bhuj railway section on the Western Railway network at an estimated cost of ₹493 crore. At present, this route operates as a single line, which

limits the number of trains that can run and creates congestion as traffic grows. The new approval is part of Indian Railways' larger capacity expansion programme that focuses on doubling, tripling, and strengthening rail lines across the country.

Adipur-Bhuj Railway Project

The Adipur-Bhuj section is strategically important because it serves the Kutch region, where rail traffic is expected to rise in the coming years. Several railway projects are already underway in the area, such as the Bhuj-Naliya gauge conversion and new rail links to places like Jakhau, Lakhpat, and Luna. Because of these upcoming connections, passenger and freight movement on the Adipur-Bhuj line is likely to increase significantly. Railway officials expect line capacity utilisation on this route to reach around 123 per cent by 2029-30 if no additional infrastructure is added.

How will this Doubling Project Benefit Passengers?

The doubling project is expected to bring clear benefits for both passengers and freight operators. Once completed, it will allow two additional passenger train services in each direction every day, improving travel options and convenience for people in the region. It will also enable the movement of an additional 12 million tonnes of freight per annum, giving a major boost to logistics and industrial connectivity in Kutch. This is especially important because the region has growing industrial and port-related activity.
