The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three major railway multitracking projects to strengthen connectivity and support economic growth. Two of these projects-Jalgaon-Manmad's 4th line and Bhusawal-Khandwa's 3rd and 4th lines-will significantly enhance rail infrastructure in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. With an estimated cost of ₹7,927 crore, these projects are set to reshape the region's transportation landscape while creating employment opportunities.

Three Key Railway Projects
1. Jalgaon-Manmad 4th Line
- Length: 160 km
- States Covered: Maharashtra
- Significance: This project will enhance rail capacity and ease congestion along a critical freight and passenger route. It will also improve connections to Nashik's Trimbakeshwar, a revered Jyotirlinga site.
2. Bhusawal-Khandwa 3rd and 4th Lines
- Length: 131 km
- States Covered: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh
- Significance: This project strengthens the link between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, boosting freight and passenger movement while improving access to key religious destinations like Omkareshwar in Khandwa.
3. Prayagraj-Manikpur 3rd Line
- Length: 84 km
- States Covered: Uttar Pradesh
- Significance: Enhances connectivity along the busy Prayagraj-Varanasi corridor.
Benefits and Impact
The multitracking projects will benefit seven districts across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, covering a total of 639 km. They will ease train operations, reduce congestion, and support the growing demand for freight and passenger services. With these projects:
- Employment Generation: Construction will generate direct employment of about 1 lakh human-days.
- Economic Growth: Improved logistics will enhance supply chain efficiency, promoting regional trade and reducing costs.
- Environmental Gains: The projects will lower CO2 emissions by 271 crore kg, equivalent to planting 11 crore trees, supporting India's climate goals.
Boost for Pilgrimage and Tourism
Improved rail connectivity will benefit pilgrims traveling to Nashik, Omkareshwar, and Varanasi. Tourists will enjoy easier access to iconic sites like Khajuraho, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and wildlife sanctuaries.
Freight Advantages
The expanded network will support transportation of key commodities like coal, cement, and agricultural products, adding freight capacity of 51 MTPA.
In alignment with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, these projects aim to create a modern, efficient rail network, fostering economic self-reliance and strengthening connectivity across India.
