2nd Noida-Greater Noida Expressway Planned, Easing Delhi-Faridabad Commute

A new six-lane elevated expressway is set to improve travel between Noida and Greater Noida. This major road project will run from the Okhla Barrage near Kalindi Kunj to the Yamuna Expressway through the Hindon-Yamuna doab area. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has been chosen to lead the construction of this riverside bypass, aiming to ease traffic and improve access to the upcoming Noida International Airport.

2nd Noida-Greater Noida Expressway

Why the Expressway Is Needed

The expressway will offer a direct route for people travelling from Delhi and Faridabad to the Noida airport. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion on existing roads. Earlier, the Noida Authority had considered building an eight-lane ground-level road. However, illegal constructions and risks of encroachments along the Yamuna floodplains made that plan difficult. So, a six-lane elevated road was found to be the better choice.

"A ground-level road would not have met the capacity or regulatory requirements. So, an elevated six-lane is the only viable solution," said Lokesh M, CEO of the Noida Authority.

New Route Plan and Project Leadership

The new expressway will connect sector 168 with sectors 149A and 150, using a 75-metre-wide road. Some changes may still be made to the final design. At first, the Noida Authority had hoped that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) would declare the project a national highway. When that did not happen, it was decided during a board meeting on March 28 that the Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna Expressway authorities would carry out the project together. The Noida Authority will lead the construction.

The project will be executed by UPEIDA, the same agency that built major expressways like the Lucknow-Agra and Purvanchal Expressways. It will begin once the irrigation department provides a no-objection certificate. The cost of the expressway will be shared by all three authorities, with a joint meeting planned to finalize the details.

Expected Benefits for Commuters

The expressway will be around 30 km long, and most of it will pass through Noida. So, Noida Authority may pay the largest share of the cost. This new road is expected to help with the growing traffic caused by more housing and business developments in the area and the soon-to-open airport. It will also provide relief to drivers using the current 25-km Noida Expressway.

By connecting directly to the Yamuna Expressway at Zero Point, it will help reduce the number of vehicles stuck in jams, cutting down pollution and saving travel time. People heading from Delhi and Gurgaon to cities like Agra and Lucknow will benefit the most.

Cloverleaf Interchange and Chilla Elevated Road

To help traffic flow better, the Noida Authority also plans to build a cloverleaf interchange near the Mahamaya Flyover. This design, like the one near AIIMS in Delhi, will link the under-construction Chilla Elevated Road with the new expressway, allowing smoother movement between the two roads.

The 5.9 km Chilla Elevated Road is another six-lane route that will make it easier for vehicles coming from Mayur Vihar and East Delhi to reach the Noida Expressway. Once the new expressway is complete, both roads together will offer fast, smooth travel between Delhi, Haryana, and important cities like Agra and Lucknow.
