Kausani Attractions - Tourist Places To Visit In Kausani

Anasakti Ashram, popularly known as the Gandhi Ashram, was constructed in honour of Mahatma Gandhi. The 'Father of the Nation’, Mahatma Gandhi, visited this ashram in 1929. He wrote his commentary on Anasakti, meaning detachment Yoga, at this place.

There are various books and photographs present in the ashram related to his life. The place has now been converted into a study-cum-research centre and facilities of lodging and kitchen are available here. There is a prayer room where prayers are held every morning and evening.

Rudradhari Falls and Caves, located at a distance of around 12 km from Kausani, lie on Kausani-Almora Road. Legends relate the site to Lord Shiva (Rudra) and Lord Vishnu (Hari). The Shiva Temple of Someshwar is located near the waterfalls.

Baijnath Temple is a noted religious site located in the town of Baijnath, around 16 km away from Kausani. The temple, built during the 12th century, holds great religious and historic significance among Hindus.

According to a legend, Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati got married at the confluence of the Gomti river and the Garur Ganga. The town of Baijnath, earlier known as Kartikyapura, served as the capital of the Katyuri Dynasty during the 12th and 13th century.  

The Kausani Tea Estate is situated at a distance of around 5 km from Kausani, on Bageshwar Road. The estate is divided into 21 parts which sprawl over an area of 208 hectares. The famous Giria's Uttaranchal Tea is produced using leaves grown in this tea estate. It also produces organic orthodox tea and exports high-flavoured tea to various places such as the United States, Germany, Korea and Australia.

Sumitra Nandan Pant Gallery is a noted tourist attraction of Kausani. The museum is devoted to the renowned Hindi poet Sumitra Nandan Pant, who was born in Kausani. The museum contains his manuscripts and drafts of his poems and other literary works as well as his awards.

There is also a collection of articles and letters written to him, on display. A huge collection of his books written in Hindi as well as in English is kept inside glass shelves. A conference is held every year on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

Lakshmi Ashram, also known as the Sarla Ashram, was established in 1948 by Catherine Hillman, a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. A big admirer of Gandhi, Catherine left London in 1931 and joined Gandhi in his struggle for independence. Later she adopted the name Sarlaben and founded this ashram to educate the girls living in the Himalayan region.

In this ashram, girls are taught various skills such as cooking, growing vegetables and cleaning. This ashram is home to several orphan girls and women. The main aim of the ashram is to give Kumaoni women a safe place to live as well as teach them skills to lead an independent life.

Rudrahari Mahadev Temple is situated at a distance of around 8 km from Kausani, on the banks of the river Kosi. It is an ancient cave temple where an ascetic known as Rishi Kaushik meditated for a long time.

Kot Bhramari Temple, also known as the Bhramari Devi Temple and Kote-ke-Mai, is located 5 km away from Kausani, on a hilltop. According to a popular legend, it is believed that the great Indian Guru, Adi Guru Shankarcharya, stayed at this place while travelling to the region of Garhwal.

Every year in August, a fair, known as the Nanda Ashtami or Nanda Raj Jat, is organised here and a big procession is carried out.

Someshwar is a renowned town located at a distance of around 11 km from Kausani. The place is known for the Shiva Temple, dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shiva. This popular temple was constructed by Raja Som Chand, the founder of the Chand Empire. The name of the temple is a combination of the names of King Som and Lord Maheshwar.

Bageshwar is a religious town situated at the confluence of the two rivers, Saryu and Gomti. Legend has it that the Hindu Lord Shiva, once wandered in the region as a tiger. The religious town is mentioned in Hindu mythology.

The place is located at a distance of about 28 km from Kausani and attracts a large number of tourists every year. The town is surrounded by the mountains, Bhileshwar and Nileshwar, on two sides. A fair known as Uttarayani is organised in the region every year and is a major draw.  

Planets Show is a planetarium-cum-Internet café, which is quite popular among tourists. An astronomy enthusiast runs this planet show, wherein tourists can gaze at artificial stars. A show is organised every evening, where astronomers explain about the planets including earth.

Trekking is a popular activity that can be enjoyed in Kausani. The Himalayan city of Kausani is an ideal place to enjoy this adventurous sport as it has one of the best trekking routes in the entire region.

The most popular trekking route is the one between Kausani and Adi-Kailash through Dharchula. Adi-Kailash is renowned as the Chhota Kailash, where snow forms an impression of the holy word ‘Om’. The other popular trek routes include those between Kausani and Sundergandha as well as Kausani and Bara Pinnath through Chhota Pinnath.

Pinnath is a village located at the foot of the Gopalkot Peak and is popular for its Pinnath Temple. This square-shaped temple is dedicated to the Hindu Deity Bhairon and has five doors facing the south. The walls of the temple are decorated with the images of Hindu deities Mahadev and Devi in adytum.

The place is also known for hosting a fair every year in the month of October. This beautiful village is nestled at an altitude of 2750 m above sea level and can be reached from Kausani by trekking around 5 km.
