Lucknow's future growth may be guided by an extensive metro network rather than roads. Under the draft Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP)-2025, a proposal has been made to develop 12 new metro corridors that will connect emerging residential areas, business districts, educational institutions, healthcare centres, and nearby towns. The plan aims to

support the city's development until 2040-50 and create a more connected metropolitan region.
DPRs to be Prepared
The proposal was recently presented by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) to the chief secretary and is now awaiting approval from the state government. Once approved, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for individual corridors will be prepared.
According to UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, the proposed network is designed not only to address current traffic issues but also to prepare for the future expansion of Lucknow. The draft plan was prepared by the Urban Mass Transit Company (UMTC) through the Lucknow Municipal Corporation.
Lucknow's Metro Network
The proposed metro network includes routes such as Rajajipuram-IIM, CCS Airport-Kalli Paschim, Indira Nagar-Anora Kala, Indira Nagar-CG City, CG City-SGPGI, Rajajipuram-Musabagh, Vasant Kunj-IIM, Munshipulia-Jankipuram, Anora Kala-Barabanki, Kalli Paschim-Mohanlalganj, Vasant Kunj-Kalli Paschim, and Anora Kala-Kalli Paschim.
The total proposed network length is around 170 km, of which nearly 150 km would be elevated and about 20 km would run underground. The longest route would connect Vasant Kunj and Kalli Paschim. A metro connection between Lucknow and Barabanki has also been proposed.
Officials believe these corridors pass through areas expected to see major residential and commercial growth over the next 15 to 20 years. Regions such as CG City, Mohanlalganj, Anora Kala, Barabanki, Rajajipuram, and Jankipuram are likely to witness rapid development.
Lucknow Metro Network to Improve Connectivity
The metro network is expected to improve connectivity, encourage investments, reduce dependence on private vehicles, and support planned urban growth. It will also connect residential areas, employment centres, hospitals, educational institutions, and transport hubs through a unified public transport system. Since the project is very large, it is expected to be implemented in phases over several years after government approval.
