In a bid to preserve the cultural and monumental heritage of its railway stations and attract tourists, the South Western Railway has embarked on a transformative journey. The operation of three pairs of Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains between Bengaluru and Chikkaballapur via Nandi Halt station marks the commencement of this ambitious project. The selected stations for phase one restoration include Doddajala, Devanahalli, Avatihalli, and the historic 107-year-old Nandi Halt.

These railway stations, now steeped in history, are set to undergo a remarkable metamorphosis. Nandi Halt, along with the other three stations, will be renovated into vibrant museums, art galleries, libraries, and exhibition centers, showcasing the rich cultural and monumental heritage of the Railways. The move aims not only to enhance the travel experience but also to revive the allure of these stations as tourist destinations.
Additional Divisional Railway Manager Kusuma Hariprasad shared that the restoration process involved reusing materials from the old buildings, giving these stations a unique blend of tradition and modernity.
The newly introduced MEMU trains, starting operations on December 11 from Cantonment Railway Station at 5:10 am and 4 pm, and from Yesvantpur at 10:10 am, have significantly contributed to the increased passenger count. Covering the journey to Chikkaballapur in just 1.5 hours, these trains have extended their services from Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur.
Despite the ongoing construction at Nandi Halt Station, plans are underway to convert it into a Rail Museum cum Rail Park, spreading across 13 acres of land. The railway department has also approached the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation for feeder bus services to facilitate accessibility.
However, members of the Passenger Amenities Committee, a statutory organization under the Railway Ministry, raised concerns about the unavailability of train services on Sundays. They emphasized the importance of catering to the needs of commuters, especially those from the IT sector in Bengaluru, who may miss out on this unique travel experience.
For those looking to explore Nandi Hills from Bengaluru, there are various transportation options. The distance by car is approximately 55.543 kilometers, taking around 90 minutes depending on traffic conditions. Alternatively, a train journey from Bengaluru to Nandi Hills Station, which is approximately 10 kilometers away from the hilltop, is another convenient choice.
Several trains connect Bengaluru to Nandi Hills, offering a greener and more efficient travel experience:
- Bengaluru's first electric train to Nandi Hills, a Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) train operating on the Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur route.
- 06531/06532 Bengaluru Cantonment-Chikkaballapur-Cantonment, another MEMU train with a stop at Nandi Hills Station.
- 06535/06538 Chikkaballapur-Bengaluru Cantonment-Chikkaballapur, the third new electric train with a halt at Nandi Hills Station.
- 06593/06594 Yeswantpur-Chikkaballapur-Yeswantpur, a MEMU train covering the same route as the first electric train.
- 16549/16550 KSR Bengaluru-Kolar-KSR Bengaluru Diesel Multiple Unit, a diesel train passing through Nandi Hills Station.
- 06387/06388 KSR Bengaluru-Kolar-Cantonment Diesel Multiple Unit, another diesel train making a stop at Nandi Hills Station.
This initiative by the South Western Railway not only ensures efficient connectivity but also promises a unique travel experience for tourists and locals alike. The revival of these heritage stations adds a touch of nostalgia and cultural richness to the journey, making it an unforgettable exploration of history and modernity. As the transformation unfolds, these railway stations are set to become cultural hubs, inviting travelers to witness the legacy of the Railways in a whole new light.
