Tungnath Temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world, is set to open for pilgrims and trekkers from May 10 to November 4, 2025. Located in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, the temple sits at an altitude of 3,690 meters, just below Chandrashila Peak. Surrounded by the Mandakini and Alaknanda Rivers, Tungnath is not only a spiritual destination but also a place of breathtaking natural beauty.
The temple will be open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, allowing visitors to experience its divine presence. Due to heavy snowfall in winter, the temple remains closed, and the idol is moved to Makkumath during this time.
Trekking to Tungnath
The journey to Tungnath is an adventure in itself. The trek begins from Chopta, which is at an altitude of 2,926 meters. The 5 km trek to the temple takes about 4 to 5 hours, depending on fitness levels. Reaching Tungnath is possible by air, rail, and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is 258 km away. The closest railway station is in Rishikesh, at a distance of 241 km. For those traveling by road, Chopta is well connected through Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag. From Chopta, visitors must complete a final 3 km trek to reach the temple.
