Will Indira Gandhi International Airport Delhi Will Become The Largest Airport In The World?

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Minister of Civil Aviation, recently said that Delhi International Airport could soon surpass all other airports in size while speaking at a conference and might become the world's largest.

The biggest and busiest domestic and international airport is the Delhi International Airport, also called the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Since Covid-19, the IGIA's capacity has increased, making it one of the biggest airports in the world day by day.

At present, the Delhi airport serves 70 million passengers annually; by the end of this year, that number is expected to rise to 109 million. Additionally, this will make it India's first airport with four runways. Yes! IGI will have its 4th runway soon and with this it will hold the position of becoming the only Airport in India with 4 runways. Also, note that IGI is already the only airport having 3 runways in India.

The airport currently has three terminal buildings, and by the end of 2023, its capacity for passengers will probably exceed 100 million.

Civil Aviation Progress in India:

Airport infrastructure in India has grown at an exponential rate. India has built 74 airports, both domestic and international in the previous nine years. The largest and busiest of these airports is the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi, which serves both domestic & international flights. The airport's capacity has steadily increased in recent years, and after Covid-19, it evolved to become one of the biggest airports worldwide.

At present, Indira Gandhi International Airport handles 70 million passengers annually; by the end of this year, that figure is anticipated to reach 109 million. Notably, the airport is unique among airports in India in that it has three runways. But after a new runway is finished in September, the airport will firmly establish itself as one of the biggest airports in the world, even exceeding Atlanta Airport.

The fourth runway is anticipated to be about 4,400 m long and 75 meters wide, according to officials. Compared to the third runway (also known as 29/11), it is slightly smaller. The wait time for flights to land and take off will be significantly reduced after the new runway.

The Delhi International Airport will become the only airport in India with four runways after the installation of a fourth. By the end of 2023, this extension and the airport's three already-existing terminal buildings will allow it to handle over 100 million passengers, further solidifying its position as the world's biggest airport.
