The Manimalarkkavu Bharani festival is a special event celebrated every year at Velur Manimalarkkavu Temple in Thrissur, Kerala. This festival, held between February and March, is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy. It attracts both devotees and cultural enthusiasts who come to experience the vibrant traditions and spiritual atmosphere.

A Historic Temple with Unique Traditions
Velur Manimalarkkavu Temple is one of the 18 royal shrines (Pathinettara Kavu) of the Kochi kingdom. What makes this temple special is its roofless sanctum sanctorum (vatta sreekovil), where the deity is worshipped in all her divine glory. The temple also has a strong historical significance. In 1956, it became the site of the Velur Maaru Marakkal protest, which played an important role in Kerala's social history. This act of defiance, though met with resistance, led to the acceptance of women wearing blouses in temple rituals.
Rituals and Cultural Performances
One of the major attractions of the Manimalarkkavu Bharani festival is the Kuthira Vela. In this grand event, effigies of horses are ceremonially pulled as part of the celebrations. The festival is also filled with the powerful sounds of melam, Kerala's traditional percussion music, which adds to the energy and excitement.
Another highlight is Karimkali, a unique folk art form performed during the festival. The presence of Velichappadu, the temple oracle, adds to the spiritual experience. Dressed in traditional attire, the oracle performs special rituals and dances, creating a deep connection between the devotees and the Goddess.
The temple grounds come alive with religious celebrations and artistic performances during the festival. The temple also houses shrines of various upa devatas (sub-deities), making it a significant spiritual center. With its rich blend of devotion, traditions, and performing arts, the Manimalarkkavu Bharani festival stands as a symbol of Kerala's deep cultural heritage.
