Kerala is known for its naturally appealing and scenic spots that would attract any traveller. Alleppey, Kumarakom and Munnar are some of the most visited places in the state. But there are some unexplored treasures in Kerala that many of the tourists are not aware of.

Nelliampathi

Nelliampathi

Nelliampathi is a picturesque hill station that is located around 60 km from Palakkad. What makes the view from atop the hills all the more charming is that it is surrounded by lush plantations of coffee and tea. The mobile network coverage would be poor here, though you might get the signals at some places.

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad and is one of the unexplored treasures of Kerala. Located around 2100 metres above sea level, this is one of the places that is apt for trekking. The mountain lake atop the hill is heart-shaped and a sight that is not to be missed.

Silent Valley National Park

Silent Valley National Park

The Silent Valley National Park is one of the natural wonders in Kerala. Located in the Nilgiri Hills at Palakkad, the national park is home to some of the rare species of animals and birds that include lion-tailed macaque, hair-winged bat, Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri Tahr, white-bellied treepie, grey-headed bulbul and red winged crested cuckoo. It is around 70 km away from Palakkad.

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad Drive-in Beach

Muzhappilangad Beach is in Kannur district and is the only drive-in beach in India and the largest in Asia. It is another unexplored beach in Kerala. Driving stunts and other adventurous activities are conducted here. The beach festival is celebrated in the month of April and this is the best time to visit this adventurous spot! The nearest town is Thalassery which is just 7 km away from the beach.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is located around 21 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad. It is the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia. Built using boulders and stones, the dam was built to supply regular water to the region during times of drought. The Banasura hills can be viewed from here, which is a beautiful sight. It is also a starting point to the trek of the Western Ghats.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary

This is the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. You can find a variety of forest birds and water birds here and the sanctuary is described as the 'richest bird habitat in peninsular India' by Salim Ali, a popular ornithologist. This sanctuary is located on the northern side of river Periyar in Ernakulam district.

Vazhachal Waterfalls

Vazhachal Waterfalls

You would've heard of Athirapally waterfalls. Here is an unexplored treasure close to Athirapally in Kerala. Both Athirapally and Vazhachal fall on Chalakkudy river and are just 5 km apart. The best time to visit the falls is from October to March.

Valiyaparamba Backwaters

Valiyaparamba Backwaters

Located in Kasargode district, Valiyaparamba is surrounded by four rivers and has several small islands. The place is a fishing centre and is just an hour's drive from Bekal.

Ilaveezhapoonchira

This hill station is a wonderful sight to nature lovers. This unexplored treasure of Kerala is located in Kottayam district and the name translates to 'valley where leaves do not fall'!

Ponmudi

Ponmudi

Located at an altitude of 1100 metres above sea level, Ponmudi is a holidaying spot in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Translated as the 'Golden Peak', the peak is one of the unexplored hill stations in Kerala and has a pleasant climate during summer too.

Thenmala

Thenmala

Thenmala is an ecotourist spot located around 70 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Thenmala means 'Hill of Honey' and is believed to have plants with medicinal properties. It also houses India's first planned eco-tourism project.
