The Hidden Charm of Rajmachi

Rajmachi also called Udhewadi is located amidst the Shayadri mountains, and is a famous spot amongst tourists for trekking. It is about 15 km from the beautiful hill station of Lonavala in Maharashtra. The village is also known for its forts built during 17th century by Emperor Shivaji. Rajmachi has 2 fortified structures- the Shrivardhan fort and the Manaranjan fort. The best way to reach the forts is through Kondiavde village or through Lonavla, the latter is an easier but longer trek. During the rainy season, Rajmachi is covered with lush green fields and waterfalls which adds to the beauty of the place. The best time to visit Rajmachi is during the rainy season.

The Rajmachi twin fortresses in their grandeur and elegance lure many tourists to the spot for trekking, sightseeing and seeking solitude amongst peace and serenity. Other than being an ideal place for trekking, Rajmachi is also known for its forts built during the 17th century. The fort is located 9 km from Lonavala in the Shayadri mountains. The major attractions of the fort are the two water tanks perched on the top of the hill. Going back to history, the Rajmachi Forts were constructed originally by rulers of Satavahana dynasty. The British accquired the forts in 1818 AD from the Mughal and the Maratha Emperors. The Rajmachi fortresses are unique in their architecture and is marked by a wide plateau on both sides.

Rajmachi also has other historical monuments such as walls, ramparts and gateways, residential quarters, a big water reservoir constructed about 200 years ago, ancient Shiva temples and idols along with administrative offices of British generals. On the western side of the Rajmachi plateau, travellers can find the Buddhist caves, which are also known as Kondhane caves. These were carved in nearly about 200 BC and have stood ever since in beauty and elegance.

The route goes from the village, fields, forest and Ulhas river. Travellers can take a dip in the waters of the river and continue trekking towards the destination. One can enjoy the waterfalls that falls directly above the caves. The breathtaking landscapes makes it an ideal spot for trekking especially during monsoon.

How to Reach Rajmachi

Mumbai is the nearest airport to Rajmachi, which is located at a distance of 83 km. Lonavala is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 10 km from Rajmachi Village. Travellers can also trek to Rajmachi from Kondiwade which is approximately 3 hours of trekking. The track goes around the hill and leads to a grassy plateau with amazing view of Ulhas valley. The Rajmachi village is at a distance of 3 hours from here. A much easier and flat walk is through Lonavala but it takes a much longer time.

Where to Stay in Rajmachi

Travellers who would like to halt can avail rented accommodation and typically Maharashtrian food in Udhewadi village. Even though there is no electricity in the village, there are solar panels which are used to charge batteries in homes of the villagers. Staying with the villagers is the best option for any traveller visiting Rajmachi since there are no hotels or resorts here.
