The Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya temple is one of the most important festivals that take place in Assam during the month of July. In a time where crimes against women see an increase, this festival celebrates the true essence of womanhood.
The Kamakhya temple impresses with its architecture. The temple has four structures with various sections of the temple built during different time periods. The four sections include the 'garbhagriha' or the inner sanctum, surrounded by three 'mandapas'. The inner sanctum is an underground cave which houses the rock formation with a nearly ten inch depression in it, through which a perennial stream flows. This is the representation of 'Yoni' or the reproductive organ of Goddess Kamakhya. Also called the Yoni Mandala, this temple epitomising creation and the power of mother earth is worshipped with the highest regard.

The Ambubachi Mela that takes place over a three day period at the Kamakhya temple celebrates the menstrual period of the Goddess. It is also a celebration of the Goddess in the form of Mother Earth. In fact, the word 'ambubachi' in Assamese means the 'swelling of water' or the rise of the rivers and other water bodies on earth, as a result of the monsoons.
The Mela consists of four days. The first three days of the Ambubachi Mela are the menstruation days of the Goddess, and all temples in the vicinity remain closed on these days. The idea is to allow her peace and quiet as she goes through the changes. On the fourth day, devotees throng the Kamakhya temple in thousands as doors are re-opened for everyone to seek blessings of the Divine Shakthi. Prasad is a small red cloth; that is symbolic of power and well-being.
The Kamakhya temple, which is situated atop the Nilachal hill, has well maintained stairways leading to the top. The temple complex comprises of many other temples besides the main Devi temple, including a temple of Lord Vishnu as well. Goddess Kamakhya is the embodiment of desire and fertility as well as the giver of salvation. People from all over the country seek her in their prayers and strongly believe their wishes will come true. The Ambubachi Mela 2014 at the Kamakhya temple, will take place from June 22nd to June 26th.
