Goddess Durga is always seen in an aggressive form; Shanta Durga is a stark contrast to the aggressive Durga, as the name says, she is the 'Goddess of Peace'!
Such importance of a Hindu Goddess in a Goa indicates to the roots of the religion which were erased by the colonisers. However, it is a must to visit Shanta Durga Temple for its architecture and its significance relating to the local history.
History of Shanta Durga Temple
Goa underwent severe religious transformations during the time of the Portuguese rule. They brought Christianity to replace the dominant religions in Goa. Hence, many temples were destroyed and churches were built on those sites.

The original Shanta Durga Temple existed in Quelossim at Salsete. When the Portuguese destroyed the temple, the prime deity of Shanta Durga was protected and was re-installed in the village of Kavalem.Naroram Mantri, a minister at the court of Chhatrapati Shahu, built the present day architecture.

The Shanta Durga Temple is one of the unique temples in India. The temple has a blend of Indo-Portuguese architecture; the dome-shaped windows, pyramidal 'shikaras' (temple towers), colourful window panes and Kashmir stone slabs give it an exotic look.
A small temple lake, the artistic Deepa Stambha (Lamp Tower) and a large temple complex are the other attractions in the temple.

Shanta Durga Temple is situated amidst the lush green hills in the village of Kavalem at Ponda. Kavalem is around 10 km from the capital Panaji.
