Unusual Temple For Goddess Saraswati

The list of Gods and Goddesses are more in Hinduism. Among them, the Trinities Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar (Shiva) are the prime deities. Especially, Shiva and Vishnu are majorly worshipped; there are thousands of temples dedicated to them in India.

However, it is rare to find Brahma temples in India. We can even find many shrines for the wives of Trinities, especially for Parvati and Lakshmi. Curiously, there are only a few temples dedicated to Brahma's wife, Saraswati.

Our focus here is on one such unique temple. This shrine is for Goddess Saraswati, the "Goddess of Knowledge". The Jnana Saraswati Temple is located in the town of Basara in Adilabad, Telangana.

Local legend says that after the horrifying Kurukshetra war, Sage Vyasa and a few of his students came to this place in search of peace. Impressed by the tranquillity of this region, they stayed here for some days and used to meditate here for hours. Hence, the region was named as Vasara.

Later, the region got influenced by Marathi language and became as Basara. Historically, Jnana Saraswati Temple is said to be built by the King Bijiyaludu. It is also one among the three temples constructed on the banks of the meeting point of the rivers Manjira and Godavari.

According to one of the ritual followed by the Hindus, young children are made to write (draw) on a plate of rice. This ceremony is called as 'Aksharabhyasa' and this is done by worshipping Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha. It signifies that a child will acquire sound knowledge and education in life. Jnana Saraswati Temple is Basara is well-known for this tradition.

How to Reach Basara

Basara is around 210 km from Hyderabad.

By Bus: Government buses are available from Hyderabad to reach Basara.

By Train: Basara Railway Station is near to Jnana Saraswati Temple. Several trains from Hyderabad travel in this route.

Tourists can take share autos from Basara Railway station for about 2.4km to reach this temple.
