Roopkund – The Skeleton Lake in Uttarakhand

Roop means 'beautiful' and kund means 'lake or pond'. Roopkund, a glacial lake in Uttarakhand, is a famous one. It is not only beautiful but there is also a mysterious touch to this lake. Hence, called Roopkund as 'Mystery Lake'. Surrounded by snow-clad mountains and glaciers, Roopkund is also a popular trekking destination. The mystery is the skeletons found in and around the lake; one can actually see the human skeletons in the water and on the banks of the lake.

Drenched in snow, Roopkund will be frozen most of the time. When the snow melts, one can see the skeletons inside the water. Scientific research suggests that the skeletal remains are of 9th century AD. Till today no one has found the exact theory for the mystery of skeletons around the lake.

DNA tests on the skeletons revealed that they belong to different groups of people. The genetic compositions had a resemblance to Iranians and locals. So there are many theories regarding the Skeleton Lake in Uttarakhand. However, with this mysterious touch and breathtaking landscapes around, Roopkund attracts many adventure enthusiasts.

As funny as it sounds, skeletons in Roopkund are disappearing day by day. Authorities say that many tourists and researchers take back these skeletons from the lake. Due to this, there is a concern for preserving these skeletons. It is actually a worrying matter that these skeletons are disappearing quite regularly.

Roopkund is developed as an ecotourist place and as of now only adventure enthusiasts or curious researchers are visiting this Mystery Lake in Uttarakhand.

Yet, Roopkund located at the foot of two Himalayan peaks: Trisul and Nanda Ghunti is a must visit for its mystic beauty. One can also get a magnificent view of Chaukhamba peak, Ronti peak, alpine pastures and snow-covered mountains from Roopkund.

Lohajung to Didina, Didina to Bedni Bugyal, Baguwasa to Roopkund, Trek from Mundoli, etc. are the famous trekking tracks in and around Roopkund. People can enjoy trekking in the Himalayan ranges and have a different experience.

Alpine meadows of Bedni Bugyal, Bedni Kund ( lake), peaceful Lohajung Village, Nanda Devi National Park, Valley of Flowers National Park, the hill station of Auli, Jyotirmath, Gari Bhawani Temple, etc. are some places to visit nearby Roopkund.
