An Explorer's Delight, Indore

Lying at the heart of Madhya Pradesh on the Malwa Plateau is the city of Indore. With its beautiful locales and many attractions, it has become a major hub for tourism. Tourists come from far and wide to explore the many old monuments and palaces, rivers, placid lakes and the breathtaking views of nature.

Indore is an explorer's delight as there are many places for you to go to here. Some of these places have gained recognition while others are just places of mediocre interest. One thing is for sure, and that is, should you travel here you will continuously be on your feet exploring the beauty of the city.

It has a mix of attractions which are historical, religious, natural beauty and adventure. So those coming here, get to choose the type of attractions they prefer to go to. Some of the tourist attractions in Indore are Chhatri Bagh, Kanch Mandir, Patalpani, Annapurna Temple, Bada Ganapati Temple and many more.

Annapurna Temple

Annapurna Temple

One of the places to visit in Indore is the Annapurna Temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Annapurna, who is the Goddess of Food. It is one of the oldest in Indore and is believed to have been constructed in the 9th century. Other than the Goddess you will also find idols of Lord Shiva, Hanuman and Kal Bhairav within this temple. Devotees come from far and wide to pay homage to the gods here. There is also a statue of Lord Kashi Viswanath, which measures the height of 14.5 ft. Tourists come here to marvel at the architecture of this old temple and also the statue that stands here.

Chhatri Bagh

Chhatri Bagh

A tourist attraction in Indore is Chhatri Bagh that features groups of memorial cenotaphs built in honour of the ruler of the Holkar dynasty. The cenotaphs of Chhatri Bagh are all dome-shaped and have a pyramidal spire on top of them. It is located on the banks of the Khan River. Tourists coming here can explore these buildings or take a stroll across the banks of the river and enjoy the cool breeze.

Meghdoot Upvan

Meghdoot Upvan

Meghdoot Upvan is one of the largest parks in Indore and is known to attracts locals and tourists alike. The park has luxurious lawns, wonderful garden terraces, decorated fountains, revolving water springs and several other attractions here. It is a perfect place to go with your family and enjoy the weekend. Tourists usually come here to laze around in the park and amuse themselves with the attractions here.

Kanch Mandir

Another place to visit in Indore is the Kanch Mandir, a Jain Temple. The temple has been built of white stone and is designed as a mansion having a canopy balcony and a shikara. The speciality of this temple is that everything in here including the walls, ceilings, floors, pillars and doors are covered in multicoloured glass and mosaics. There is an idol of Lord Mahavira installed within this temple. Devotees come here to pay homage to the lord. Tourists come to this temple to marvel at the architectural excellance and also to learn more about Jain history.

Bada Ganpati Temple

Another tourist attraction in Indore is the Bada Ganapati Temple, which is famous for its 25 ft idol of Lord Ganesha. This idol of the lord is believed to be the largest idol in the world and attracts many a tourist. Devotees flock to the idol during Ganapati puja, when a major celebration is held here. Tourists come to this temple to witness the large idol of Ganesha, that is said to be have been made of bricks, limestone, jaggery, soil of the seven mocha puris, mud from the stables of horse, cow and elephant and the powder of Pancharatna (diamond, emerald, pearl, ruby and topaz) and the holy water from all the major pilgrimage sites.

Patalpani

Patalpani

A major tourist attraction in Indore is the Patalpani Waterfall that is located at a distance of about 36 km from the main city. The water is said to cascade down a height of 300 ft and legend has it that the pit to which it falls reaches all the way to patal (hell), hence the name Patalpani. It is a beautiful picnic spot where you can come with your family and enjoy the sight of this beautiful waterfall. The best time to see this is during the monsoon when the force of the water is high.

Rajwada Palace

Rajwada Palace

Another place to visit in Indore is the Rajwada Palace, which used to be the mansion of the Holkar Dynasty. This palace that is around 200 years old stands majestically with its grand architecture having designs from French, Maratha and Mughal designs. Tourists coming here are left awestruck by the beauty of this huge palace. You can explore the inside of this building and also know more about the kings who once ruled these regions.

How to Reach Indore

How to Reach Indore

By Air: Indore is connected to most parts of the country through Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport. There are direct flights linking Indore to other metro cities of the country.

By Train: Indore is well-connected through the railways to the rest of the country. The four railway stations of the city are Rajendra Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar, Saifee Nagar and Lakshmibai Nagar.

By Road: Indore has a strong road network and several bus services connect it to various parts of Madhya Pradesh as well as the country. A number of national and state highways pass through Indore, like NH-3, NH-69, NH-86, etc. These roadways and bus services make Indore very accessible.
