Ooty, a famous hill station loved by tourists, recently experienced a dramatic dip in temperature, reaching zero degrees Celsius last Friday. The sudden cold snap was recorded at the Government Botanical Garden (GBG), a popular spot in the area. This was a sharp drop from the five degrees Celsius recorded earlier that week on Tuesday. Officials believe that in some remote areas, like Avalanche, the temperature might have fallen even lower than zero, highlighting the intensity of the cold.

Ooty Cold Wave
The annual frost season in Ooty, which usually begins earlier in November, was delayed this year. It started in the third week of November but was quickly interrupted by heavy rains brought by Cyclone Fengal. Despite the delayed onset and interruptions, the temperature plummeted to zero degrees Celsius, covering the sprawling GBG in a thick layer of frost. The garden now looks like a picturesque winter wonderland, attracting visitors eager to witness the rare beauty of frost in Ooty.

While the cold weather delights tourists, it has posed significant challenges for the local community. Tea plantation workers, who rely on early morning hours for their work, are struggling due to the severe cold. The icy conditions make it nearly impossible to carry out their tasks, as the cold bites at their hands and fingers.
"The drop in temperature has hit normal life, and labourers employed in tea plantations are unable to work in the mornings due to biting cold," said V Manikandan, a local farmer. Farmers are concerned that the extreme cold might lead to tea leaves withering, which could affect their harvest and income.

A Unique Situation for Ooty
The sudden weather changes in Ooty have brought contrasting outcomes. For tourists, the frost offers a magical experience in a region known for its mild weather. However, for the local community, particularly farmers and plantation workers, the harsh cold is a serious challenge. This situation highlights the unpredictable nature of environmental changes and their varying impact on people and livelihoods.
As Ooty navigates these weather extremes, it reminds us of the delicate balance between nature's beauty and its challenges. While visitors marvel at the frost-covered gardens, the locals brace themselves for the difficulties brought on by the freezing temperatures.
