Odisha Tourism – The Lagoon Town of Chilka

Chilka is home to the largest coastal lagoon in India. The pride of this region is the Chilka Lake which is the second largest lagoon in the world.

Tourists come from far and wide to enjoy the beauty of the region and also to refresh themselves here.

There are very few places of attraction in the Chilka region, but when you have the second largest lagoon in the world here you have no reason to complain.

Head out on a boat to enjoy the cool breeze and explore the many islands here. If you are not too adventurous the you can visit the bird sanctuary here and explore these vast marsh lands.

Chilka Lake

The Chilka Lake that lies at the mouth of Daya river and is home to many migratory birds who come from places like Caspian Sea, Iran, Russia and far off Siberia.

It is believed that over 205 species of birds come here of which 97 species are inter-continental migrants. It is a haven for bird watchers who come here to see these birds.

They can study the lifestyle of different species of birds here. It is also a hub for photographers who come here to click pictures of these birds.

Another unique feature about the lake is that it is dotted with many small islands. Tourists can travel to these island on a boat and enjoy the tranquility of the place.

Some of the most visited islands in Chilka Lake are The Birds Island, Honeymoon Island, Parikud Island, Breakfast Island, Malud Island, Nirmaljhara Island, Kalijai Island and Nalabana.

Mangalajodi Bird Sanctuary

The Mangalajodi Bird Sanctuary houses many migratory birds, water birds, and local birds. Some of the birds you can see here are Black Winged Stilts, Sandpipers, Purple Swamphens, Open Billed Storks and Glossy Ibises.

It is also a fishing village where you can see fishermen setting out to the lake. The fisherman's catches include variety of fishes, prawns, crabs and other fresh seafood.

Tourists can directly purchase their choice of fish from the fishermen and head to the nearest shack to have it cooked by the locals.

How to Reach Chilka

By Air: The nearest airport to Chilka is the Biju Patnaik Airport in Bhubaneswar which is at a distance of 110 km. This airport has the facility of domestic and international flights as well.

By Train: The nearest railway stations are at Rambha and Balugaon. Rambha is situated 32 km away from Chilka whereas Balugaon is close by. It is well connected with Bhubaneawar and Kolkata.

By Road: There are regular buses that are available from the state capital to Chilka. Interstate buses also run here from Kolkata. Tourists can avail taxi services also. To experience a wonderful time, you can take a boat ride as well.
