Faster Coastal Travel: Bengaluru to Mangaluru Vande Bharat Trial Completes 8-Hour Run

A full-route Vande Bharat trial ran between Bengaluru and Mangaluru on Saturday, September 5. The 16‑coach rake left Yeshwanthpur at 6:05 am. It routed via Hassan, Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road. Schedules targeted an 8 hour 20 minute run to Mangaluru Central. The train arrived around 4:30 pm, with timings under review by South Western Railway. Electrification of the ghat in 2025 enabled these trials.

The route’s challenge is the ghat’s 30 kmph cap and stringent safety rules. Trials in August added automatic emergency braking to manage steep, curved descents. Initial public runtime is expected near seven to seven‑and‑a‑half hours. Likely halts are Yeshwanthpur, Hassan, Sakleshpur, Subrahmanya Road and Mangaluru Central. The return trial clocked a 3 pm departure from Mangaluru for checks.

Bengaluru to Mangaluru Vande Bharat: New 8-Hour Route Trial, Expected Stops, and Launch Updates 2026

Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat launch window, stops and likely timings

Today, Monday, September 7, officials are expected to vet the timing trial data. Watch for schedule approval, rake allocation, days of run and commercial halt confirmation. Fares should use Vande Bharat multipliers for Chair Car and Executive Class. No launch date is valid until an SWR or Railway Board order. Follow SWR and the Bengaluru division for formal notices.

Station Scheduled time
Yeshwanthpur 06:05 (depart)
Hassan ~09:00
Sakleshpur 09:55
Subrahmanya Road 12:30
Mangaluru Central 14:25

Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat connections to Udupi and Manipal

Once timings firm up, beach trips become easier with short Udupi hops. Multiple daily trains connect Mangaluru and Udupi in roughly one to two hours. Frequent buses on the coastal corridor cover the distance in about ninety minutes. For Manipal, change at Udupi and use local buses or autos. Plan seat selection for views; northbound, left windows face the sea.

Until services launch, trains and roads remain workable, with caveats. The KSR Bengaluru–Kozhikode Express remains the fastest rail option at about nine hours. NH 75 improved this summer, yet monsoon landslides can delay journeys or divert traffic. Highway four‑laning studies and permanent restoration tenders are now moving ahead. Build weather buffers, and track SWR advisories before finalising weekend plans.
