The Delhi government is planning to redesign bus routes across the city to make public transport more convenient and better connected. The new plan will consider the existing Metro network, e-rickshaws, and Gramin Seva vehicles while deciding where buses are needed, creating a coordinated public transport system instead of having different services operating along the same routes.
Delhi Government to Redesign Bus Routes
Under the proposed system, officials will prepare an integrated route plan covering different modes of public transport. This will help avoid unnecessary duplication of services and allow buses to be shifted to areas where connectivity is currently poor. The government expects this exercise to make better use of available buses and improve access to public transport in more parts of Delhi.
The task of rationalising the bus network has been given to IIT Delhi. The new route plan is expected to be ready by February 2027. Passenger surveys are already being conducted in different parts of the city to understand travel patterns and identify areas that need better services.
As part of the exercise, 121 routes in the east zone, 181 in the west zone and 194 in the north zone are being prepared for public feedback. Officials will also study the availability of Metro services and other modes before finalising the routes.
In areas where Metro connectivity is already strong, some bus routes running parallel to Metro corridors could be reduced. The buses and resources saved through this process may then be used in locations where public transport is inadequate.
The government also plans to reorganise e-rickshaw routes. E-rickshaws and autos will mainly be used to provide last-mile connectivity between neighbourhoods and Metro stations or other major transport points that do not have direct bus or Metro access.
Another major part of the plan is the development of Anand Vihar, Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi railway stations as integrated multi-modal transport hubs. These hubs are expected to bring different transport services together and make transfers easier for commuters.
