Mysore is a hub of tourism in Karnataka and also a weekend destination for Bengalurians. Many times people visit Mysore just because they can't decide on a destination. Yes, it is one of the top tourist places in Karnataka. Among various attractions, Mysore Zoo is the most favourite of all.
No matter how many times we visit, Mysore Zoo is never missed! Unfortunately, the 124-year zoo is going to be shut down for a month. Yeah, the officials have decided that Mysore Zoo will be closed for a month from January 4th because of bird flu.
In fact, it is for the first time such a decision has been taken to safeguard the birds in the zoo. Some migratory birds have died due to avian influenza (H5N8) at the end of December. Looking at the deaths of these birds, the zoo officials have decided to close it for a month.
Though the flu will not affect the humans, it has been taken as a precaution. Officials are also monitoring the resident birds for quiet a while. The Zoo executive director K Kamala has said that this decision was taken after seeing the death of four Greylag Geese and two spot-billed pelicans. These were migratory birds who stayed as the zoo environment was suitable for them.
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens is one of the best tourist places in Mysore. It gets thousands of tourists on a regular basis. It is the first ever time that it is getting closed for a longer time. Therefore, please don't plan a trip to Mysore Zoo till February 5th.
The Executive Director has also said that the test reports from the National Institute of High Security and Animal Diseases have confirmed that avian influenza is the cause of these bird deaths. So, they have made this decision to protect other birds as well as visiors.
It is indeed sad that our favourite destination won't be open for a while. So, do plan your trip accordingly.
