In fact, it is for the first time such a decision has been taken to safeguard the birds in the zoo. Some migratory birds have died due to avian influenza (H5N8) at the end of December. Looking at the deaths of these birds, the zoo officials have decided to close it for a month.

Though the flu will not affect the humans, it has been taken as a precaution. Officials are also monitoring the resident birds for quiet a while. The Zoo executive director K Kamala has said that this decision was taken after seeing the death of four Greylag Geese and two spot-billed pelicans. These were migratory birds who stayed as the zoo environment was suitable for them.
