Onam is one of the most important festivals celebrated in Kerala. Onam 2026: Significance & Rituals
Onam is closely associated with the story of King Mahabali, a beloved ruler who is believed to visit Kerala during this period. According to tradition, Mahabali's reign was considered a golden age when people lived happily and peacefully. Onam is celebrated to welcome his annual visit and remember the values of prosperity, equality, and togetherness.
One of the most popular Onam traditions is making pookalam, colourful floral designs created at the entrance of homes. Families decorate their houses with fresh flowers to create unique designs during the festival days. People also wear traditional clothes and decorate their homes to welcome guests and celebrate the occasion.
Another major part of Onam is the Onam Sadya, a traditional vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. It includes several dishes such as rice, sambar, avial, thoran, olan, pickles, payasam, and other preparations. Families often sit together and enjoy the meal as part of the celebrations.
Traditional cultural activities are also an important part of Onam. These include Vallam Kali or snake boat races, Thiruvathira dance, Pulikali, music and other folk performances. People also visit relatives and friends and exchange greetings.
