Mahashivratri is a special day for all the devotees of Lord Shiva. It is the day when we celebrate his power, his grace, and his love. And what better place to celebrate than the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, where Baba Mahakal, the lord of time and death, resides in all his glory.

The Mahakaleshwar Temple:
The Mahakaleshwar temple is one of the most sacred and ancient temples of Lord Shiva in India. It is also one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the places where Lord Shiva manifested himself as a pillar of light. Here, you can feel the presence of Baba Mahakal in every corner, every stone, and every sound.
You can see him in his different forms and moods, dressed in beautiful clothes and ornaments, smeared with holy ash and herbs. You can hear him in the chants, the bells, and the drums. You can touch him in the water, the flowers, and the prasad. You can smell him in the incense, the camphor, and the bhang. You can taste him in the sweets, the fruits, and the milk. In 2024, Mahashivratri is set to take place on the 8th of March. The Mahashivratri festival at the Ujjain Mahakal temple is uniquely celebrated.
Shiv Navratri: A Festival of Joy and Devotion
Before Mahashivratri, there is another festival that celebrates Baba Mahakal's various aspects and attributes. It is called Shiv Navratri, or the nine nights of Lord Shiva. During these nine days, Baba Mahakal shows us his different forms and expressions, each one more amazing and awe-inspiring than the other. Each day, we perform different rituals and ceremonies to honor and please him.
- Day 1 - Chandan, Bhang Shringar And Vastra Dharan: On the first day, we welcome Baba Mahakal with sandalwood and bhang, which make him happy and calm. We also offer him new clothes and jewels, which make him look handsome and charming.
- Day 2 - Sheshnaag Shringar: On the second day, we worship Baba Mahakal as the lord of the snakes, who protect him and serve him. We adorn him with a snake garland, which represents his power and wisdom.
- Day 3 - Ghatatop Shringar: On the third day, we adore Baba Mahakal as the source of all blessings and boons. We decorate him with a pot filled with water, flowers, and coins, which symbolize his abundance and generosity.

- Day 7 - Uma Mahesh Shringar: On the seventh day, we celebrate Baba Mahakal as the husband of Goddess Parvati, who is his consort and companion. We embellish him with his beloved Parvati, who is his strength and support.

Mahashivratri: A Day of Gratitude and Surrender
On the eighth day, Mahashivratri arrives, the most auspicious and sacred day of the year. On this day, we express our gratitude and surrender to Baba Mahakal, who is our savior and master. We fast, we pray, we sing, we dance, we meditate, we offer, we receive. We stay awake all night, waiting for his darshan, his vision. We witness his grand shringar, his divine appearance.
