Onam Rush: Kochi Metro Adds Extra Services and Feeder Trains to Beat Festival Crowds

With Onam crowds peaking today, Tuesday, August 25, Kochi Metro will run extra afternoon services and reduced headways, while a special feeder links KUSAT station and Thrikkakara Temple through August 26. The plan targets shopper and temple rush across Lulu Mall, MG Road and Thrikkakara, easing road congestion and rain-hit commutes. KMRL asks riders to plan return trips slightly earlier than usual.

From 3:00 pm, trains run every 6 minutes 45 seconds, with four extra services slotted for Tuesday. A standby rake remains ready to handle surges. Regular closing is 11:00 pm, but KMRL has operated last departures around 11:30 pm on recent festival nights and earlier this year, and can extend tonight if crowds persist.

The electric feeder starts at KUSAT Metro and drops near Thrikkakara Temple’s approach, bypassing festival bottlenecks. It runs every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm, August 23–26. Expect heavier loads near evening puja; boarding one slot earlier helps families and seniors.

Water Metro links and practical tips

Headed to Fort Kochi or Marine Drive after shopping? Park at Vyttila Mobility Hub, ride the Metro, then hop to Water Metro from High Court jetty to Fort Kochi, typically every 30 minutes. Recharge a Kochi One smart card to skip queues. Carry rain layers and allow extra time near mall stations.

KMRL staff will meter entries and guide queues at platform screens this evening. For faster boarding, use middle coaches and pre-plan exits. If schedules shift, check the live ‘Next Trains’ display in stations or on KMRL’s station pages before starting. Late shoppers often find thinner crowds after 9:30 pm.
