Iruttu Kadai: Off to Taste The Best of Halwa!

By Siji Ram

Anyone who tastes halwa from Iruttu kadai finds it unique in taste. Iruttu kadai, which translates to "The Dark Shop" is located in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. The shop gets its name as it operates with minimal lighting.

This interesting halwa shop is located in the front of the famous Nellaiapar temple in Tirunelveli. The shop is open only from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The shop is dimly lit, with just a bulb to lighten up the space.

The ingredients used to make this halwa remains a secret, and the taste is unique, which is not found in any other halwa available in the market.

Iruttu Kadai

A shop with no name, yet all the fame!

A family that migrated from Rajasthan to Tirunelveli centuries back runs the halwa shop. Though you may get Tirunelveli halwa from various other stores, the authentic Tirunelveli halwa is only sold here.

Though the shop opens at 5.30pm, you can see a large queue near the shop much earlier. Apart from the name Iruttu kadai, the shop doesn't have any particular name or a board to identify itself from other shops. The dimly lit interiors make the shop unique in itself.

Some here believe that the water used to make the halwa comes from the river Tamirabharani, giving it the unique taste and sweetness.

Though other manufacturers of halwa use machines and technology to make the sweet, the halwa you get from Iruttu kadai is handmade.

What Else to Explore in Tirunelveli

Apart from a visit to Iruttu kadai to taste the yummiest of halwa, you can also venture out to some of the tourist attractions in the place. Nellaiapar Shiva temple is the largest Shiva temple in Tamil Nadu.

The other attractions in Tirunelveli, or Nellai as the locals call it, include Kappal Matha church, Mela Thiruvenkatanathapuram temple, Sri Alzhiya Mannar Rajagopala Swamy temple and Sri Varadaraja Perumaal temple.

Keezha Thiruvenkatanathapuram or Keezha Thirupathi is a village close to Tirunelveli famous for The Sengani temple, which later took the name Sangani. The temple architecture resembles that to the famous Tirupati temple.

Take a trip to this beautiful city for the best tasting halwa and more!
