Experience the Winter: Kashmir in the Grip of Snow

Kashmir transforms into a breathtaking winter landscape as temperatures take a significant dip in the region. Famous spots like Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg experience chilling temperatures and heavy snowfall. The region is currently under the grip of 'Chilla-i-Kalan', the 40-day period known for being the harshest part of winter, leading to the freezing of water bodies and water supply lines. Despite the challenges, the spell of frosty enchantment across Kashmir offers a unique winter experience for travelers.

As the winter season deepens its hold over the northern regions of India, Kashmir experiences a significant drop in temperatures, making it a unique destination for those seeking the serene beauty of a cold landscape. Srinagar, the illustrious summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, witnessed a chilling minus 3.0 degrees Celsius on a recent Monday night, marking a further decline from the previous night's minus 2.3 degrees Celsius. This trend of plummeting temperatures is not unique to Srinagar but is echoed throughout most parts of the scenic Kashmir Valley.

Pahalgam: The Coldest Valley in the Kashmir

The quaint town of Pahalgam, located in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, is not only a gateway for pilgrims partaking in the sacred Amarnath Yatra but now holds the title of the coldest recorded place in the Valley. With temperatures reaching a freezing minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, it descends further into winter’s embrace. The nearby ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla also feels the winter's chill with a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, inviting adventure enthusiasts to its snowy slopes.

Morning Fog Disrupts Daily Life in Srinagar

The arrival of dense fog has added a layer of complexity to the already frosty conditions in Srinagar. Disrupting the routine of early morning life for the second consecutive day, the fog has led to reduced visibility and caused less traffic on the roads. Motorists are advised to drive with caution as the visibility dropped to a mere 91 meters. This natural phenomenon adds a mystic allure to the valley, even as it poses challenges for the locals.

The Harsh Beauty of 'Chilla-i-Kalan' in Kashmir

Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chilla-i-Kalan'—the 40-day period known for being the harshest part of winter. During this time, the region is enveloped by a cold wave that leads to the freezing of water bodies, including the iconic Dal Lake, and even the water supply lines in various parts of the Valley. The chances of snowfall hit their peak, blanketing the landscape, particularly the higher reaches, in a thick layer of snow. This period, which casts a spell of frosty enchantment across Kashmir, will last until January 31.

Even after 'Chilla-i-Kalan' comes to an end, the people of Kashmir won't find immediate respite from the cold. The region will continue to experience the wintry chill with the successive phases of 'Chilla-i-Khurd' and 'Chilla-i-Bachha', which represent the smaller cold and the baby cold periods respectively. For travelers, this means that the opportunity to witness Kashmir's winter wonderland extends well beyond the end of January, offering a prolonged period to experience the snow-clad paradise that is Kashmir in winter.
