With the Kanwar Yatra 2026 in progress, Indian Railways, state transport departments and police authorities have introduced several measures to help lakhs of Kanwar pilgrims travel safely and comfortably. These arrangements include special trains, extended rail services, extra buses and traffic diversions across northern India. Authorities have also advised both
pilgrims and regular commuters to plan their journeys, as traffic restrictions will be in place in cities such as Ghaziabad, Muzaffarnagar and Mirzapur.
Kanwar Yatra Special Trains
To handle the heavy rush of pilgrims travelling to Haridwar and Rishikesh, Northern Railway has announced the extension of several train services. The Delhi-Saharanpur MEMU train will be extended up to Haridwar from July 30 to August 14. The train will leave Delhi at 4.15 pm, reach Saharanpur at 8.50 pm, stop there for 20 minutes, and then continue via Roorkee and Jwalapur, reaching Haridwar at 10.50 pm. For the return trip, the train will depart Haridwar at 2 am, arrive in Saharanpur at 3.40 am, halt for 40 minutes and finally reach Delhi at 8.45 am.
Northern Railway has also extended the Delhi-Shamli DEMU service to Haridwar during the same period, from July 30 to August 14. The train will travel through Shamli, Thana Bhawan, Rampur Maniharan and Tapri before reaching Haridwar. On the return journey, the service will operate from Haridwar via Jwalapur, Roorkee, Tapri, Rampur Maniharan and Shamli before reaching Delhi.
Apart from these extended services, Northern Railway will also run special Mela trains for Kanwar pilgrims. The Haridwar-Delhi Shahdara Fair Special via Tapri will operate from July 30 to August 13, while the Yoganagari Rishikesh-Delhi Shahdara Fair Special, also via Tapri, will run from July 30 to August 14.
How will these Special Trains Benefit Passengers?
These additional train services are expected to reduce overcrowding, improve connectivity and provide a more convenient travel experience for the large number of devotees visiting Haridwar and Rishikesh during the annual Kanwar Yatra. Meanwhile, commuters have been advised to check train schedules and traffic updates before travelling.
