In the heart of the majestic Himalayas lies the famed Manali-Leh-KhardungLa route, a path that beckons adventure seekers from around the world. This iconic route is known for its breathtaking landscapes, challenging terrain, and high-altitude passes. In the company of my father, I embarked on this exhilarating adventure, and I am sharing glimpses of my travel diary from the remarkable journey we undertook through this awe-inspiring region.

A thrilling adventure unfolded as my father and I undertook a remarkable journey, conquering the iconic Manali-Leh-KhardungLa route on our bicycles. This is not just a tale of altitude and challenging terrain; it's a story of determination, camaraderie, and pushing one's limits. Join me, Sohan Raghuram- an author, passionate traveler, and blogger-as I share our story in simple words.
A Family Dream Realized
My connection with this extraordinary route goes back to 2015 when, at the age of 8, I witnessed my father complete the arduous journey for the first time. Inspired by a father-daughter duo (52Yr/15Yr)l during his initial ride, he harbored a dream of embarking on this adventure with me when I turned 15. The dream was to pedal through the challenging landscapes of the Himalayas, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

The Challenge Begins
The journey commenced from Jagatsukh, a picturesque village in the Kullu Valley, where three other avid cyclists joined our expedition. The timing was both exciting and daunting, as the region had recently faced the wrath of nature with devastating landslides and a cloud burst. Undeterred, we set off, bidding farewell to the lush greenery of Manali, ready to face the unpredictable challenges that lay ahead.
Battling Nature's Fury
The weather gods played their part, showering us with rain on the very first morning. Undeterred by the wet and cold conditions, we pedaled through low visibility, beginning the gradual ascent from the greenery of Manali towards the arid desolation of Ladakh. The challenges were relentless - steep inclines, rocky paths, and the constant threat of altitude sickness. However, the bond among fellow riders, the encouragement from our guides, and the breathtaking vistas kept our spirits high.
Testing Limits Every Pedal of the Way
The terrain pushed me to the edge of physical and mental endurance each day. Yet, the joy of speeding downhill after a grueling climb was unmatched. Racing down with the wind in my ears, surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes, transported me to another realm. The journey covered 530 kilometers and included conquering six of the Himalayas' formidable passes, each with its unique characteristics.
Triumph Over Terrifying Heights
From RohtangLa to BaralachLa (15,910 ft), NakeeLa (15,547 ft), LachungLa (16,616 ft), TanglangLa (17,842 ft), and the ultimate challenge - KhardungLa (17,982 ft), the erstwhile highest motorable road in the world. The climbs were not just physical but mental battles, especially the legendary Gata Loops, an 11km ascent with 21 hairpin bends, each offering a story of endurance and survival.
Emotions at the Summit

The pinnacle of our journey was the daunting climb up KhardungLa. Covering 39 km from Leh, the ascent demanded every ounce of strength due to low oxygen levels. A grueling 7-hour climb concluded with tears of triumph at the summit - a culmination of emotions and a realization of newfound strength.
Lessons Learned and Shared
This incredible journey wasn't just about conquering heights; it imparted invaluable life lessons. It taught me that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with determination. Meeting people of different ages, each dealing with their unique challenges, highlighted the importance of patience and resilience.
As we rode through these challenging terrains, I battled a mental struggle daily, urging myself, "Today is not the day to give up." The journey was a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
