The Government Museum of Chennai is the second largest museum of India, only after the Indian Museum at Kolkata. Spread across 16.25 acres of land, this museum has a vast array of galleries and other collections, and is popular for its archaeological and numismatic collection.

The museum is located at Egmore, which is at the heart of the city. The museum complex comprises of 6 buildings that has 46 galleries that include collections of palm-leaf manuscripts, Amravati paintings and other artefacts that are cover diverse fields like archaeology, numismatics, sculptures, natural history and zoology.

There is a museum theatre situated close to the main museum entrance gates, which boasts of its Italianate style of architecture, which was no longer popular in England during those times. Built in the late 19th century, the walls and columns of this structure are adorned with floral patterns and geometric patterns. This theatre was used for staging English plays preferred by the British elite of the city. The hall can accommodate around 600 persons, and has a large stage and adjoining actors' dressing rooms.

The extensive galleries of the museum include the South Indian Sculptures Gallery, North Indian Sculptures Gallery, Foreign Animals Gallery, Coral Gallery, Economic Geology Gallery, Pre-Historic Gallery, Musical Instruments Gallery, Philately Gallery, Numismatics Gallery, Tanjore Painting Gallery and Raja Ravi Varma Gallery among the rest.

The Kids Museum here is an added attraction of the complex. It has the Dolls Gallery, Civilisation Gallery, Science Gallery, Transportation Gallery, Technology Gallery and the Kids Corner.

Reaching the Government Museum in Chennai

The museum can be easily located by road, rail and air. It is around half a kilometre from Egmore Railway Station, 2km from Central Railway Station and around 20km from Meenambakkam Airport.
